Debt Constellation
A gamified debt payoff tracker that turns each debt into a star in a personal constellation. As debts get paid down, their stars brighten and glow, making progress feel visible and rewarding instead of just numbers on a spreadsheet.

01
Research
Debt payoff calculators already exist, but nearly all of them present numbers going down with no sense of momentum. The dry, spreadsheet approach doesn't account for the psychological side of paying off debt, people need to feel progress, not just see it.
02
UX decisions
Every debt became a star in a constellation, dim while owed, glowing once paid off, so progress reads visually instead of numerically.
Payoff method (snowball, avalanche, or custom drag-order) stays a real choice rather than a fixed default, since people pay off debt for different psychological reasons.
03
Iteration
Built iteratively across several rounds: started with a flat purple dashboard, then reworked the palette to a darker, glowing, techy aesthetic.
Added editing, undo history, drag-to-reorder, per-debt color coding, and payment logging with real-pace projections, each round driven by direct feedback on what felt missing.
04
Implementation
React with inline styling and SVG-based animation for the constellation itself. No backend yet, all state lives in memory for this prototype.
Deployed as a static build on Netlify.
05
Lessons learned
The most valuable addition wasn't a feature, it was honesty: once real payments could be logged, the debt-free date switched from an assumed pace to the user's actual average, and the UI says plainly which one it's using.
06
Outcomes
Live as an interactive prototype. Persistent storage and a savings/investing tracker are the next planned steps.
