Case study

Rootbound — a cozy witchcraft life-sim, built from zero coding experience

You inherit a dying witch's cottage, revive the land plot by plot, and slowly uncover what happened to the witch who came before you — with a familiar who chose you, for reasons no one will explain. The core game — farming, trade, relationships, calming corrupted land — is built and playable. Art, dialogue, and additional content are still in progress.

01

Research

The starting constraint wasn't creative, it was practical: zero coding experience and a game that needed farming, trading, relationships, and a mystery to work together at once.

Cozy games were the reference point, but most of them are frictionless by design. The thing worth keeping was the tone; the thing worth adding was a reason to keep going — something to find out.

A familiar who chose you, for reasons no one will explain.

02

UX decisions

Land restoration is the spine. Corrupted plots are calmed one at a time, so progress is visible in the ground itself rather than in a stats panel.

The mystery surfaces through people, not through a quest log. Relationships in the valley are how the previous witch's story arrives.

Farming and trade stay simple enough to be restful, but real enough to fund the rest of the game.

03

Iteration

Built from day one, not planned first and built second. The early version worked, mostly, and then the real work started — a continuous stretch of breaking things, fixing them, and revising until it looked and felt the way it was supposed to.

No clean milestones to point to, just steady iteration until it was right. It's live and downloadable today. Not yet in the app stores — that's next.

04

Implementation

Godot 4 with GDScript and hand-drawn art in Aseprite — learned in the open, while building. The core game is built and playable; art, dialogue, and additional content are still ahead.

05

Lessons learned

Learning to code and designing the game at the same time meant the design followed what was actually buildable — which turned out to be a feature, not a compromise.

The familiar was the moment the game clicked. An unexplained companion gave the player a question to carry through every quiet task.

06

Current state

Still in active development — art, dialogue, and additional content are not yet built.

What does work is the core game: farming, trade, relationships, and calming corrupted land are built and playable. App-store versions come after the content is finished.
